Gary Freeburg
I had a wonderful time enjoying his lecture about 1000 Smokes. Gary
seems like such a great guy to be around and when I talked with him
briefly at the end of the presentation you can tell just how much he
loves his work and what he does. I also enjoyed all the stories he had
to tell about his time at this location, especially since when he talks
about his photographs he goes to a different place. In some ways I would
love to be able to stand there and feel the same way about it.
I also fell in LOVE with his work. It is so simple but yet says so much,
my favorites of his photographs was those of the black and white film. I
felt like those images said so much more to me than the colored
photograph, it maybe because I love a good black and white over a color a
photograph at times. These images said so much to me though when you
looked at them you got a seance of peace and you were taken to a whole
different place.
The above image is one image that I was just so amazing when he went to
it. When I look at this image it is just breath taking. It is so simple
and peaceful, the way the water looks and the reflection. When he talked
about this photograph you can tell he just loved it, as he mentioned it
is hard to get such a great picture of this place. He also said he was
only their for about 20 minutes when he basically took him about a long
time to get up there just to take this one photograph. I feel like if
this image was in color it would be have such a strong meaning to me
even though the sky would be a wonderful blue color which would pop it.
But when you look at this you get a sense of loneliness which is
something that is seen in a lot of his works. Also peaceful and it
transforms you to that feeling and is almost like you could be there as
well. I also love the ice that is through the middle to separates the
real from the reflection. It reminds me of the line between the real and
the unreal and stressful and peacefulness.
When I look at his work it makes me want to spend my life traveling even
though I wanted to before hand. But after seeing this short
presentations it makes me know that what I want to do is what I really
want to do with the rest of my life. I loved his presentation and I can
not wait till I get my copy of his book!!
Near the end of the presentation when those got to ask any questions
they had it was interesting when the little boy asked some amazing
questions, they were simple but yet Gary gave such a great answer to
those questions he asked. It makes me wonder why does everyone have to
think so deep about questions sometimes our minds need to think simple.
Gary's answer to the question did you have fun was such a great answer
as he mentioned his first time he did not have fun. Which is something
that everyone has to overcome it may not see fun at first but in the end
it could be the best time you have ever had.
